A great experience

I want to thank John Bell and his campaign staff for the wonderful campaign they ran. Though bucking a considerable political headwind, John ran, what in my limited experience, was a masterful campaign. Everyone I talked to knocking doors or making phone calls who had met John was won over by him. His willingness to talk to them and listen to them made each voter feel like he was their personal candidate.

I came on board in July and I learned so much I will need some time to digest it all. Though the outcome was not what we wished for, the experience of working with a first class team and a first class candidate was worth every minute.

I hope that one takeaway from Tuesday will be an understanding of how important it is for Democrats to remain involved. That regardless of who might top the ticket a lot of good candidates went down to defeat in part because Democrats did not appreciate the need to work at the local level regardless of the state-wide ticket.

I believe it was the late Tip O’Neil who said all politics is local. Now we need to make local politics ours. We need to build the party infrastructure, build links to the community, and look to the 2010 elections.

The Gainesville Group needs to grow as well and increase our ability to positively affect the lives of people in the Western end of PWC. We need to rededicate ourselves to serving our community and to our mission of supporting our candidates and committees in every way possible.

We have the choice to either sit back and point fingers, or to step up and make ourselves heard. Call Bob Marshall on his cell as he requested when he introduces bills you don’t like. Challenge him to live up to his campaign promises on roads and schools.

Do not allow the disappointment of Tuesday to drive us from the field. Perhaps after last November we sat on our laurels and this November we paid the price. Not only in the loss of John Bell, but in the Paul Nichols and Chuck Caputo losses as well as others. Too many good candidates went down to defeat when there was more we could have done to win those races. We must never allow that to happen again.

Food for thought on Republican Health Care Plans

From the Washington Monthly web site dated September 5. Why are Republicans like Pawlenty not going on record to abolish Medicare, Medicaid, and all the other programs not permitted by their extremely strict interpretation of the 10th amendment to the constitution? Wouldn’t that mean an end to social security and many other federal programs?

But did Republicans vote to “end,” “abolish,” and “kill” Medicare? It’s provocative, but it’s a supportable claim. In April, 137 Republicans voted in support of a GOP alternative budget. It didn’t generate a lot of attention, but the plan, drafted by the House Budget Committee’s Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) called for “replacing the traditional Medicare program with subsidies to help retirees enroll in private health care plans.”

The AP noted at the time that Republican leaders were “clearly nervous that votes in favor of the GOP alternative have exposed their members to political danger.”

AMERICANS UNITED FOR HEALTH CARE & INSURANCE REFORM RALLY & March in Washington, D.C. Sept. 13, 2009

sioux city, August 31, 2009: A rally/march will be held in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 13, 2009 between 12N – 5pm in support of the administrations health care and health insurance reform goals. It is the goal of Americans United for Health Care and Insurance Reform to let congress know that all Americans need health care and insurance. Over 47 million Americans are uninsured and millions more are underinsured or at risk of losing their health insurance.

The rally/march will begin at the Lincoln Memorial and march to the steps of the Capitol Building via the National Mall. This rally/march will be peaceful.

Robert Reich has given his support to this rally and march, “….I just want Congress to know how many Americans want universal health care and will settle for no less than complete coverage and no less than a public insurance option, to keep private insurers honest. So I’m happy to lend my support to whatever you are doing.”

Americans have enjoyed the freedom of movement, speech and employment. It is time that American citizens have the freedom that comes from knowing they have affordable health care for themselves and their families. Health care is not just for the privileged but it is a fundamental right.

Other groups marching on September 13, 2009 for health care reform are Congressman Fattah’s “March for Healthcare”, “Medicare for All”, and “March on Washington for Health Care.”

We invite all those who wish to participate visit our web blog at http://www.americansunitedhcr.wordpress.com and register to rally.

What Republican Obstructionism has cost all of us.

A really good post on the costs of our deteriorating roads and growing congestion. Would you believe $1000.00 per person per year?
